Albanian weather turned out to be not that hot as it usually is here in summer. On the matchday in Korce it was a nice cool evening. A small rain finished about an hour before the match.
In comparison with the first leg game at Borisov-Arena the coaching staff of Aliaksandr Yermakovich made three changes to the starting eleven. Siarhei Kryvets, Aliaksandr Karnitski and Vitali Haiduchuk found themselves on the bench while Aliaksandr Valadzko and Edhar Aliakhnovich as well as Mikhail Hardzeichuk.
BATE were a bit more active in the first minutes having more possession. Skenderbeu were also ready to attack making the game a fascinating show. BATE created several good opportunities on set-pieces by Maksim Valadzko. After one of them Vitali Radzionau was close to a goal but missed the target.
On the whole the game was an entertaining one to watch for the fans. 29th minute was the climax of the half. Maksim Valadzko made a run down the left flank and made a cross for Anri Khagush. The Russian defender netted a good header using the bar for deflection.
The Albanian side answered with a supermoment as well. Progni shot from the 16-meter line, but Chernik managed to cancel it out using the post. The remaining part of the first half was a more peaceful one. There was one fire in BATE's penalty box, but Chernik managed to cover it eventually. And BATE had two good moments. First Illia Aleksiyevich had a one on one opportunity, but lost the duel to the goalkeeper. And then Vitali Radzionau fought for the ball well and had a shot, although with a narrow angle. The shot was saved by the keeper.
BATE looked quite confident, but 67th minute changed everything. A set-piece by Radas turned out to be a bridge too far for Siarhei Chernik. BATE goalkeeper did not manage to stop the ball, and it jumped into the corner to make it 1-1 - still a score that was satisfactory for BATE.
The opponents tried to attack with greater aggression. But the coaching staff were there with timely substitutions. Aliaksandr Paulau, a great master of counterattacks turned, was on time for a great chance. Sasha created a great opportunity for Illia Aleksiyevich, but he was unlucky again firing into the keeper.
The last five minutes were a true endeavour for the fans of both teams. In 87th minute Filipenka hit his own post in a desperate attempt to clear the ball away. Then Arapi had an opportunity, but fired wide. And after that Lilaj frightened the Yellow-Blues with a long-range shot moving the sidenetting. And in the added time his shot from inside the box was blocked.
When the game was just two minutes to go, BATE had their golden opportunity again. Vitali Radzionau and Aliaksandr Paulau had a counterattack opportunity, but spoilt it with a bad pass. Then a referee gave Skenderbeu a farewell gift of a free-kick. Radas shot above the bar that proved that BATE were the team to qualify for the next round.
BATE packed the 1-1 draw that promoted the team to the next round. Hungarian champions Debreceni VSC will be the opponents.
Aliaksandr YERMAKOVICH (FC BATE Head coach):
- I am happy we got the result we needed to get
to the next round. It is never easy in the UEFA Champions League, and
Skenderbeu were a very difficult opponent. But we scored a good goal we needed
and now head towards Debreceni. I substituted Khagush because he had a minor
injury. But I am very much satisfied with the way he played.
